Car charges at police, runs down woman, during Brussels anti-Islam protest (VIDEO)
A disturbing amateur video shot seconds later show the vehicle hitting a woman wearing a hijab, without so much as slowing down, as she bounces off the bonnet.
There were disturbing reports[1] that a passenger in the Audi leaned out of the auto to take a picture, although this has not been verified.
Although seriously hurt, the woman was conscious as paramedics attended to her at the side of the road.
The hit-and-run came as tensions continued to escalate in the Belgian capital, with police out in force on Saturday to ward off trouble after local authorities banned a scheduled anti-Islam rally and any counter-protests.
Police have yet to confirm the motivation behind the crash, or reveal the condition of the woman who was hit.
Authorities in the Belgian capital, fearing violent disorders, banned all demonstrations after a group of right-wing hooligans congregated at the same square last Sunday.
Police said the men were under the influence of alcohol and drugs, in possession of smoke bombs, and claimed they had no recollection of the incident.
A white Audi tried to run through a police road block during an unsanctioned demonstration in the infamous Brussels district of Molenbeek.
The surviving supsect of the Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam was taken alive by police from the area last month.
Tension has been high in Molenbeek following the Brussels attacks.
He denies having any prior knowledge of the Brussels attacks.
The incident comes as Brussel's Zaventem airport[2] re-opens just 12 days after it was bombed by ISIS.
Shops were shuttered up as the group shouted anti-Islamic slogans, under a banner stating "This is our country".
In the latest development, Belgian prosecutors today charged a third suspect with "participation in the activities of a terrorist group" over the France plot.
