Hijab-clad woman taken off plane in US

Abdulle's husband Abukar said:^[1] "She was humiliated because of her religion and the way she dressed".

A female flight attendant came along and told her she could not make the switch and Ms. Abdulle asked why that was so.

The woman, who is of Somalian descent and was wearing a hijab, or headscarf, was escorted to the ticket counter, where she waited three hours for a connecting fliight, said Chaudry, who described the experience as humiliating for the woman.

When police asked the flight attendant at the gate if there was any reason why Ms Abdulle had been taken off the plane, the flight attendant replied "No" and that she "not feel comfortable" with the passenger.

She was on her way to help her niece, who's about to give birth, and had reportedly asked a fellow passenger if she could swap for an aisle seat according to the Baltimore Sun ^[2]. Following her request to the fellow passenger, a flight attendant approached her and said that they were not allowed to exchange seats inspite of the airline's policy of unassigned seating arrangements. When she was about to switch her seat, the unnamed flight attendant allegedly intervened.

CAIR ^[3] has called for an investigation of "bias motive" regarding the incident, as well as a formal apology from Southwest Airlines and a refund of the airfare to be given to Abdulle. Fadaw also added that his wife, who does not speak English, suffered extreme anxiety due to this experience. "You have to leave the airplane, '" Abukar Fidaw said.

This is not the first time the carrier has been involved in such an incident.

Brandy King, a spokeswoman for Southwest Airlines, was quoted as saying that the "information available, collected at the time of the event, indicates that our employees followed proper procedures in response to this customer's actions while on board the aircraft".

Southwest Airlines, which is increasingly becoming notorious for its racism, showed little remorse on its action. "She was publicly humiliated before a plane full of passengers ", said Zainab Chaudry of CAIR. Though the other Southwest Airlines passenger had no problem switching seats with Hakima, the flight attendant did. "We are responsible for the comfort of all passengers and do not tolerate discrimination of any kind", the statement read. And on Friday, the Chicago Tribune reported ^[4] that a local Muslim family said that they plan to sue ^[5] the same airline for kicking them off a plane after having trouble with their child's booster seat.
