Order on Hijab Issue Upheld

KOCHI: Following a submission by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) before the Kerala High Court on Friday that it had on April 26 issued a revised notification regarding the use of hijab (headscarf), an HC Division Bench held that the single judge directive permitting Muslim girls to appear for the May 1 entrance test wearing hijab (headscarf) and long-sleeved dress should not be interfered with.

As per the revised notification, the candidates for the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT)-2016, who turn up in religious dress, should report at their respective centres by 8.30am for proper frisking.

It was a Division Bench of Justice P N Ravindran and Justice Sunil Thomas that passed the verdict while closing an appeal filed by the CBSE against the Single Bench order. The Bench also directed the CBSE to give wide publicity to the notification. In its appeal, the CBSE had said the Single Bench verdict would entail deployment of more women invigilators. The CBSE found it extremely cumbersome to employ more women invigilators at this belated stage.

The single judge had asked the candidates to present themselves at the venue half an hour before the scheduled time. Following the revised notification, the candidates have to reach the centre one hour before the exam commences. Further, the single judge had ordered that the frisking of female Muslim candidates should be carried out by women invigilators.
