California girl wearing hijab identified as 'Isis' in yearbook photo

A California high school girl posted a photo on Friday of her yearbook picture, only instead of her name, the yearbook caption read, "Isis Phillips," ABC News ^[1] reported.

The student at Los Osos High School, who has not been identified, is wearing a hijab in the photo.

"I am extremely saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed that the Los Osos High School yearbook was able to get away with this...Apparently, I am 'Isis' in the yearbook. The school reached out to me and had the audacity to say that this was a typo. I beg to differ, let's be real," the girl said to ABC ^[2].

The school has since tweeted an apology and one of the students on the yearbook staff said that the typo was an honest mistake. He explained that there had been a student named Isis Phillips at the school, but that student had transferred schools earlier in the year.

Principal Susan Petrocelli said that the school is working to correct the error.

LOHS is taking every step possible to correct & investigate a regrettable misprint discovered in the yearbook. We sincerely apologize.

The school district said in a statement to the media ^[4], "We are investigating to figure how this happened and we are certainly sensitive to the young lady. We have been in contact with the family and will continue to work with them to determine how this could happen and how we can remedy the situation."

CAIR, or the Council on American-Islamic Relations ^[7], said on their website that they are concerned about the issue.

"[CAIR, a] Muslim civil rights group is calling for a thorough investigation, 'appropriate measures' to address suffering of the student and her family."
