A young woman says she was told she couldn't rollerblade at an indoor skate park in Brossard on the weekend because of her hijab.
Hoda Mady, a 19-year-old Dawson student, says she was first approached by a regular at the park who told her she couldn't wear it because it was a safety risk, and that it was the rink's policy, even though she skated before there with the hijab.
She then had that policy confirmed by one of the rink's employees.
"He talked to the man behind the desk, trying to get a confirmation from him," she says, "and the guy did confirm, he said, 'yeah, that is our policy, nothing on your head, unless it falls off.'"
A manager at the Paladium skate park says it was a misunderstanding — and there's no reason she should have not been allowed to wear her hijab.
Mady says that in eight years, she's never had to deal with her hijab falling off during physical activity, whether it was skating, or skiing, or tobogganing.
