Barbie in hijab takes Instagram by storm

The doll size 'Hijarbie' replica wears an array of colourful outfits, many of which are inspired by their fashion designer creator, a 24-year-old Nigerian student. Mattel asked to create real version

LONDON A new doll nicknamed "Hijarbie" has taken Instagram by storm thanks to her trendy headscarf.

The Barbie doll — who even has her own social media account — was thought up by Nigerian student Hannefah Adam when she came to study in the UK.

She noticed a lack of diverse toys for little girls and wanted to introduce a modest dress doll to the market, reports the Daily Mirror.

Now, she's calling on Mattel to keep up with their many Muslim followers and create areal Hijarbie.

Fashion designer Hannefah, 24, told Style Mic: "It got me thinking about how I'd actually like to see a doll dressed up like I would have — covered up."

She makes all of Hijarbie's outfits herself, dabbling in bright red dresses matche d with grey headscarves and teaming all-black outfits with a matching headdress.

Hannefah draws a lot of inspirations from her own outfits, too.

Many of her outfits are near-exact replicas of her own wardrobe, styled complete with fashion blogger poses on the photo-sharing app.

And, the doll's loyal followers have been using her to take fashion advice from, too.

One user called caviartaste_tunabudget wrote on one image: "I love those colours, especially the burgundy. Wearing with black looks quite nice, thanks for the idea."

This comes after Mattel launched a new range of curvy, petite and racially diverse dolls.
