In lieu of Mattel's recent release of a more diverse set of Barbie options, 24-year-old Haneefa Adam has created an Instagram of her own line of Barbie fashions called Hijab Barbie[1], or for short — Hijarbie.
"Hijab means modesty to me and it's my unique identity," said Adam, "It's my crown and it represents my own personal control over the way I want to be seen. Not leaving out the fact that it's a religious induction."
All of the mini-outfits on the Instagram are designed and sewn by Adam herself, and she's currently building a website for Hijarbie[2] so the outfits she's designed can be sold.
"It's important to create a sense of value in the Muslim child, especially the girl child," Adam said of her designs, "They become more confident, more driven, they believe more in themselves, which leads to an appreciation of herself and her modest lifestyle and upbringing. Instead of dressing up her dolls in clothes she wouldn't wear, hijabifying it will create a sense of belonging and hopefully make a positive impact."
