SXSW 'Embarrassed' by Volunteer Who Asked Muslim Woman to Remove Hijab
lbtihaj Muhammad *A statement from officials of the South By Southwest Festival (SXSW)[3] shows them red-faced after a female Muslim athlete put them on social media BLAST following a request made by one of their volunteers.
lbtihaj Muhammad, an American Olympian, was asked to remove her hijab by a staffer at the event, and told she could not receive her badge until she did.
When Muhammad attempted to make them understand she wore the hijab for religious reasons, it made no difference to the volunteer.
"I was just asked to remove my hijab at SXSW Registration for my ID badge. I can't make this stuff up," Ibtihaj Muhammad tweeted[4] from the Austin, Texas, event.
